One thing I absolutely dread is studying. I’ve always run into problems when it came to what I should focus on and what I shouldn’t. Being in college, I’ve grown to realize, is basically a non stop study session. I think during syllabus week, one of my teachers came of with some formula calculating how much time that we should study for just her class. It was something like for every 3 credit hours (1 course) = 3 hours in class per week = 6-9 hours study time per week. And if youre like me taking 12 hours, 12 credit hours (4 courses) = 12 hours in class per week = 24-36 hours study time per week. What even? As if classes and work aren’t over bearing enough, we should go home and dive into our books until we pass out. No thanks.
As a junior in college, I have quickly learned to take advantage of all my breaks. I was able to schedule all my classes pretty close together but I left myself about an hour break between my first two. During my break I eat, study, and prep for my next class. I might make flash cards over the terms we learned in class or re work some problems. I try to review as much as I can before getting to my homework that night in hopes that I won’t be too overwhelmed.
When the time does come when I’m through with work, class, and meetings….it’s time to finally tackle homework. Thankfully, my apartment complex has big comfy study rooms where I can study my way. I try to take care of the easier assignments first (replying to a discussion, taking a short quiz ect.) Once I finish the easy stuff, I take a break. I’ll watch some Netflix or grab a snack, something to clear my mind for a bit before I start on the heavy work. If I have reading to do, Ill do the gummy bear trick. Ill put a gummy bear at the start and end of every paragraph. If I have some math work to do, Ill work a few problems then take a break and really analyze how and why I got the answers that I did.
